Town Crier - July 7th City Council Meeting

The Tuesday, July 7th, City Council meeting will begin with a presentation by the Heartland Community Action Agency, which will act as the grant administrator for Winsted’s small cities development program. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development recently awarded the City of Winsted and the City of Mayer $397,536 in program funds. The City is required to have a program administrator to be eligible to participate in the small cities program and Heartland will be appearing before the Council to explain in detail their role in the upcoming applicant process.

In other matters, the City Council will review a request from Mark and Jean Ochu for an extension to correct blighting conditions on their property at 130 6th Street South, review the findings of the 2008 audit, and consider the purchase of a brush chipper for the Public Works Department.

The Winsted City Council will meet to discuss these items at their meeting on Tuesday, July 7th at 6 p.m. in the Winsted City Hall Council Chambers. If you need more information on an issue, call City Hall and ask for the City Staff Report (not all agenda items have a corresponding report) which will provide you with background and financial information on the topic. Meetings are broadcasted live on Winsted Channel 10 at 6 p.m. and replayed on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m., 7 p.m., and 10:30 p.m. In addition, pre-recorded video City Council meetings are available on the City of Winsted’s website at www.winsted.mn.us.

Town Crier - June 16th City Council Meeting

The Tuesday, June 16th, City Council meeting will begin with the presentation of the Winsted Airport “Master Plan.” The master plan is a thirty (30) year planning document for the development of the airport, which subsequently makes projects included in the plan eligible for 95% funding from the FAA. One of the major components of the plan is a shift of the runway to the north to accommodate an asphalt runway surface. The city is not financially obligated to follow the plan; however, in order to receive FAA funding, reasonable progress must be made on meeting the plan’s objectives.

In another matter, the City Council will review guidelines for downtown development in Winsted. In 2006, the City’s Downtown Renewal Commission developed a set of “Downtown Design Guidelines.” The guidelines address signs, awnings, building materials, color, windows and other items associated with the redevelopment of building facades in the downtown. The guidelines were intended to be incorporated with a potential grant award to downtown businesses and the development of the lakefront promenade; however, with the grant application going unfunded in 2006, the guidelines were never formally presented to the City Council.

In other business, the City Council will consider certifying blighting conditions at 140 Sherman Avenue East and review a signage plan to connect the Luce Line Trail through Winsted for bikers, walkers, and other non-motorized trail users.

The Winsted City Council will meet to discuss these items at their meeting on Tuesday, June 16th at 6 p.m. in the Winsted City Hall Council Chambers. If you need more information on an issue, call City Hall and ask for the City Staff Report (not all agenda items have a corresponding report) which will provide you with background and financial information on the topic.
